FAQ
Where's the combat room?

We're in the basement of Woolen Gym; the front desk will direct you to us or just message us on GroupMe prior to practice and someone will be in the lobby to guide you.

What if I practiced a different style of TKD or a different martial art entirely?

While general movements (like kicks or blocks) might be similar, WT Taekwondo has techniques that are specific to WT. For example, each poomsae is created by and unique to WT TKD, and we have different sparring rules from ITF (kicks only allowed above the waist, etc).

We suggest you begin attending beginner classes to get used to our techniques and poomsaes, but you're welcome to attend advanced classes whenever you're ready.

What are attendance requirements?

If you want to compete or participate in belt testing, there will be attendance requirements (>70%). However, we are all students, and we get it. Life gets busy. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case evaluation by officers. If you just want to learn taekwondo or join us for a workout, feel free to hop in and out of class as fits your schedule.

What if I'm late?

Coming late is better than not at all. Be sure to warm yourself up and stretch; slide back in with the rest of class when you're ready.

Can I only come to sparring/poomsae?

If you plan on belt testing or competing; no.
Belt testing requires attendance to both sparring and poomsae classes as you'll be tested on both skills. If you plan on competing, it is highly encouraged you attend sparring and poomsae classes for the practice and the workout. (We also have attendance requirements for competition team members).

Otherwise, come out to whatever classes you'd like!

What's the situation with competitions?

We make selections for each competition team based on:
-
Skill level (relative to your belt level)
-
Commitment (attendance, engagement during practice)
-
Level of competition we are attending (nationals vs. local level)
-
Current funding

For local/home tournaments, more people will be invited to compete and vice-versa for away tournaments due to competition costs and level.
-
Poomsae is divided by gender and level belts
-
Sparring is divided by gender, belt and weight levels (weigh-ins occur the night before or morning of every competition)
-
Color belt sparring will always follow Junior Safety Rules (JSR) and scored by hand
-
Black belts will be full contact and typically use Daedo Gen2 scoring systems.
-
-
We encourage but do not require you to compete in both sparring and poomsae.
-
For higher-level tournaments, we may require additional training. These will occur at a time and place (outside of our normal hours) that best fits the competition team's schedule.

Most competition costs are covered by the club. In some cases, there are out-of-pocket fees for athletes (i.e. plane tickets). We will let you know prior to competition registration. If you're unable to cover this but would like to compete, we will do our best to work with you.

What's the situation with transportation?
Many of our students live on campus, so there will likely be a buddy for you to walk back to your dorm with.
Our officers and senior members (with cars) are all more than happy to provide rides to and from practices and social events. Many of us live all over Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Durham, so there’d likely be someone headed your direction anyways.
